The Chief Joseph Trail Ride
![]() |
Bill and Bonnie's granddaughter Lucy Samuels (at age 15). One of our girls who has grown up riding with the Chief Joseph Foundation program. Lucy is with one of the CJF trail horses, "Wapiti's Tiger", getting to ready to ride out on the 2nd day of the ride. They are at Hammer Creek camp ground on the Salmon River in Idaho near the Whitebird battle ground of the 1877 war with Gen. Howard. They ride about 20 or 25 miles per day for 5 days to complete the 100 mile section of the Nez Perce trail every year. It's 1300 miles from start to finish at Bear Paw near the Canadian border, where Chief Joseph finally had to surrender to the Army. That's where he gave his famous speech, "From where the sun now set's, I will fight no more forever!"

Our grand daughter, Lucy Samuels. Lucy was named Jr. Scout for the CJ Trail Ride. They have to have been on the ride for five years before they qualify to be a Scout, and Lucy is the FIRST Nez Perce Scout EVER on this ApHC National Trailride. She is mounted on Appy Jack in this photo, July 2006, in Idaho. This is really a great honor for her and she is very proud! |
